How Passionate Are You?

It’s hard — perhaps impossible — to think of a compelling speech that is devoid of passion. Being passionate is showing strong feelings or beliefs, and it’s easy to see why it is part of the Boldness character strength — passion drives action. If you are passionate about something, it doesn’t matter what others say — you feel compelled to act. You probably also lose track of time when you are doing something you’re passionate about. The Latin root for passionate means “to suffer.” Can you think of something you care so much about, it makes you ache? That is passion.

This week’s Challenge: This week, I will take stock of what is truly important to me and take some kind of action to support that.

Avoiding being Antagonistic (overuse): Being passionate about something is one thing, but when you find that you are passionate about something to the point it is creating conflict, it’s time to take a step back. That subtle shift from passionate to antagonistic makes a not-so-subtle shift in energy — from heartfelt to hostile — and away from exerting positive influence. Being heartfelt can inspire others; being hostile can put them on the defensive and shuts them down to new ideas.

Commendable Trait: Passionate

Underused: Unengaged

Overused: Antagonistic

Strength: Boldness

Quadrant: Courage
