How Flexible Are You?

Weekly Challenge #39

“The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that breaks.”
Japanese proverb

Flexible comes from the Latin root meaning “to bend.” There’s often more than one “right” way to do something — the trick is not to be so married to your own approach that it gets in the way of achieving your goal. Being flexible is recognizing when loosening the grip of your idea so that you can find common ground with another will help move your objectives forward. As Colin Powell said, “Leaders honor their core values, but they are flexible in how they execute them.” Bamboo does bend… but it also has roots firmly planted.

This week’s Challenge: This week, when I hit headwinds, I will look for ways to bend while still honoring my core values.

Avoiding being Erratic (overuse): Being erratic is being unpredictable. If you are so malleable that you’ve lost sight of your vision or your core values, then possibly you’ve moved from creating positive influence to triggering behavior in others because they are unsure of where you’ll stand. At that point, you have eroded trust others have in you. To get back into a balanced use of flexibility, remind yourself of your guiding principles only make those changes which do not violate those principles.

Commendable Trait: Flexible

Underused: Inflexible

Overused: Erratic

Strength: Openness
